Commentator and writer

Sid Waddell was a writer and television personality whose best-known stage was the darts commentary box. His work ranged from books and children’s television to the extravagant one-liners that became his broadcasting signature.

One celebrated example put Eric Bristow alongside an ancient conqueror: ‘When Alexander of Macedonia was 33, he cried salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer... Bristow’s only 27.’ It was sporting commentary delivered with a comedian’s sense of scale and timing.
