First staged in 2000 in memory of North East actor Sammy Johnson, Sunday for Sammy grew into one of the region's great entertainment institutions: a huge live show bringing together actors, musicians, comedians and assorted North East show-offs, often without telling the audience in advance exactly who was going to turn up.

The shows have featured generations of the region's best-known performers, but the point has never just been getting famous people on a big stage. Money raised supports the Sunday for Sammy Trust, which helps young North East performers with grants towards training, equipment, travel and the difficult business of getting started.

That makes Sunday for Sammy part celebration, part reunion, part fundraiser and part reminder that a creative scene survives because one generation bothers to help the next one.

North East comedy isn't only a collection of individual careers. It's venues, friendships, projects, opportunities and people deciding to make something happen together.

Few things demonstrate that better than Sunday for Sammy.
