STAN LAUREL

Stan Laurel was born Arthur Stanley Jefferson in Ulverston in 1890, so before anybody writes in, yes, we know.

But the North East gets a proper claim.

As a boy he lived for a time in Dockwray Square in North Shields, while his father worked in theatre management on Tyneside. Before Hollywood, international fame and one of the greatest comedy partnerships ever put on film, part of Stan Laurel's story happened here.

He began in British music hall, joined Fred Karno's company and eventually settled into film in America. His partnership with Oliver Hardy produced more than a hundred films and shorts and created a double act recognised around the world: Laurel's bewildered innocence alongside Hardy's doomed dignity, usually seconds before everything collapsed.

Their influence runs through generations of physical comedy, sitcom, sketch and double acts. In 1961, Laurel received an Honorary Academy Award for his pioneering contribution to cinema comedy.

There are not many people connected to the North East whose work helped define what screen comedy itself could be.

So yes, he was born in Cumbria.
