Blyth-born Scott Dobson was an artist, teacher and critic as well as a writer who brought Geordie dialect into books, broadcasting and live entertainment. His best-known book, Larn Yersel Geordie, appeared in 1969 and was followed by further humorous books about the region and its language.

Dobson died on the Maltese island of Gozo in 1986 and is buried there. His headstone carries an appropriately Geordie farewell: ‘Gan Canny’.
