Esther McCracken
Actor and playwright
Esther McCracken acted with Newcastle Repertory Company before becoming known for domestic comedies such as Quiet Wedding. She also introduced Wot Cheor Geordie for many years. Her granddaughter is the actor Imogen Stubbs.
Her contribution to Newcastle extended beyond entertainment. In 1967 she co-founded the MEA Trust with Mungo Campbell and Alistair Fyfe. Its MEA House opened in 1974, after her death, as Britain’s first purpose-built centre for voluntary organisations.
