Edward Chicken

Poet and schoolmaster

Archive image for Edward Chicken

Edward Chicken was born in Newcastle in 1698 and worked as a schoolmaster. His poem The Collier's Wedding follows wedding celebrations, marriage and drinking, with the wedding dinner taking place in Benwell. It is an early literary record of North East dialect: alongside a narrative in standard English, the collier's speech preserves local language.
