Poet, songwriter and miner

Shotley Bridge-born Tommy Armstrong became known as the “Pitman Poet”. While working at various collieries in the Durham coalfield, he wrote songs and poems drawn from the lives of its working communities, mixing humour with accounts of hardship and disaster.

Wor Nanny’s a Mazer is one of his familiar comic songs. His writing brought the experiences of Durham’s mining communities into English workers’ song.
