Lewis Carroll
Author and poet

Lewis Carroll's family connections brought him to Whitburn and Southwick. His nephew and biographer, Stuart Dodgson Collingwood, described visits to cousins at Whitburn and associated Jabberwocky with an evening spent making up verses there. The poem's first stanza had already appeared in Carroll's earlier manuscript magazine, Misch-Masch.
People Carroll encountered in Whitburn have also been suggested as inspirations for characters in his books.
