John W. Chater
Publisher, printer and bookseller

John William Chater ran a small Newcastle bookshop and publishing business, bringing local dialect writing to readers through books, almanacs and annuals.
His Keelmin’s Comic Annewal promoted itself as the work of “The clivvorest cheps aboot Tyneside; Awl M’yed Oot O’ Thor Awn Heeds”, a proud claim to home-grown humour and imagination. Sales are said to have reached 20,000 copies per print run.
